Tripura, June 18: In a major breakthrough, Dharmanagar police apprehended two drug peddlers red-handed with a large consignment of Yaba tablets on Wednesday evening, acting on a tip-off. The operation was carried out near the Dharmanagar police station corner area.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Ashish Chakma and Bishal Chakma, both residents of Nabinchhara under Pecharthal in Unakoti district. Police sources informed that the duo was attempting to smuggle the contraband using a high-speed auto-rickshaw bearing registration number TR 05 A 2824 when they were intercepted.
Officer-in-Charge of Dharmanagar Police Station, Smritikanta Bardhan, stated that they received specific information around 7:40 PM regarding the movement of suspected drug peddlers. Acting swiftly on the input, the police team conducted a raid and intercepted the vehicle near the Dharmanagar PS corner.
Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered 1,800 Yaba tablets, weighing approximately 175 grams. The estimated black-market value of the seized narcotics is said to be over ₹9 lakh.
The raid was led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Dharmanagar, B. Zureen Puiya, and OC Smritikanta Bardhan, along with a team of police personnel. A forensic expert team from Kailashahar and a Deputy Collector from the Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Office also participated in the operation.
An NDPS case has been registered, and a detailed investigation is underway. Preliminary interrogation of the accused is ongoing to uncover more links to the drug smuggling network.
The arrested duo will be produced before the Dharmanagar District and Sessions Court on Thursday.
