Kailashahar, June 19: A 52-year-old sanitation worker has been sentenced to three years in prison by the Unakoti District and Sessions Court for inappropriate conduct with two minor girls during the COVID-19 pandemic. The judgment was delivered on Thursday by Special Judge Amarendra Kumar Singh.
According to Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb, the incident occurred in 2020 at the Kumarghat COVID Care Centre, where patients from across Unakoti district were receiving treatment. The accused, identified as Jhantu Deb from Uttar Pabiachhara in Kumarghat, was posted at the centre during the pandemic.
Wearing protective gear, he allegedly misused his position while interacting with minor patients. After the minors became suspicious of his behaviour, they reported the matter to medical staff at the centre. The accused was immediately restrained and a formal complaint was lodged at Kumarghat Police Station.
Following the complaint, the police registered a case and arrested the accused. Substantial evidence was gathered during the investigation led by Officer Govinda Lal Sinha. A charge sheet was filed on November 30, 2020.
During the trial, a total of 16 witnesses testified. After reviewing all testimonies and evidence, the court found the accused guilty. Along with the prison sentence, he was fined ₹3,000, with an additional three months of imprisonment in case of non-payment.
Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb represented the government in the case and informed the media about the court’s decision.
The two minors involved in the case were residents of Kailashahar and Kumarghat, respectively.
