Tripura, 22 June, 2025: Kalyan Sagar Lake, located beside the iconic Matabari Temple in Tripura, has successfully completed the first phase of its first-ever scientific turtle study. The initiative is being conducted with the technical expertise of the Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation (TSAF).

During the first phase, specially designed hoop traps were deployed to safely capture the turtles. Once captured, each turtle underwent tagging through toe clipping, followed by detailed assessments of morphometry, weight, length, overall health, and other biological parameters.

This study is aimed at determining the exact population size of turtles in the lake, their health status, breeding behaviors, and other key scientific indicators. It marks a significant step toward better conservation and understanding of the turtle species residing in Kalyan Sagar.

The second phase of the study is scheduled to begin after the monsoon season.
Special thanks have been extended to Dr. Arunima Singh and Dr. Sushmita Kar of TSAF for their dedicated efforts and support.
The District Magistrate of Gomati district Tarit Kanti Chakma also expressed gratitude to the Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation for providing the necessary technical assistance in undertaking this pioneering research initiative.
