Tripura, 19 June 2025: The Khowai District Court has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment and imposed a financial penalty in connection with a murder case. In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered one month of imprisonment in default of fine payment.
The incident took place on January 13, 2022, the eve of Makar Sankranti, at Bisharad Sipahipara in Baijalbari under Khowai Police Station. On that night, a group of friends had gathered for a picnic. During the gathering, a heated altercation broke out among four friends over an unspecified issue.
In a fit of rage, Sanjoy Debbarma (28), Alim Debbarma (30), and Supar Debbarma (24) brutally assaulted Dinesh Debbarma (26), stabbing him with a knife and inflicting severe injuries. The wounded Dinesh was first taken to Baijalbari Primary Health Centre, then referred to Khowai District Hospital. While being transferred to GB Hospital in Agartala later that night, he succumbed to his injuries.
On January 14, the elder brother of the deceased filed an FIR at Khowai Police Station against the three accused. The case was registered as Case No. 2/2022 under IPC Sections 302, 201, and 34.
Following the registration of the case, the police launched an investigation and arrested all three accused. Investigating Officer Sukanta Debbarma submitted the chargesheet on April 18, 2022.
After recording the testimonies of 15 witnesses, Judge V.P. Debbarma of the Khowai District Court today pronounced the verdict, finding all three accused guilty of murder and sentencing them to life imprisonment along with a fine of ₹50,000 each.
Additionally, Sanju Debbarma received an extra two-year sentence for the charge of destroying the murder weapon.
The case was prosecuted by government lawyer Advocate Abhijit Bhattacharya.
