Tripura, June 13, 2025: Subrata Chakraborty, a school teacher and resident of Jail Road in Belonia, has installed a 3-kilowatt rooftop solar plant at his residence under the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana. He received a government subsidy of ₹85,800 for the installation. The solar unit now powers his entire home, eliminating the need for monthly electricity bills. With an on-grid setup, Mr. Chakraborty also earns by feeding surplus electricity back to the grid.
The centrally sponsored scheme aims to promote affordable and eco-friendly solar energy adoption among lower- and middle-income households across India. In Tripura, the initiative has gained momentum, with many families taking advantage of the opportunity.
Encouraged by Mr. Chakraborty’s success, several other residents have embraced solar power:
Amita Bhowmik and Aparna Bhowmik installed 2 kW rooftop systems on tin roofs. Ajay Bhushan Sen and Biswajit Mallik from Shaltilla, Kalpana Debnath, a pensioner from Bogafa, Jagannath Debnath, an employee of the Power Department, Utpal Sarkar from Sarashima, and Deepali Dutta from South Jolaibari have each installed 2 kW rooftop systems and received subsidies of ₹66,000.
These residents no longer pay traditional electricity bills and generate income from excess solar power. Others such as Aparna Dey Bhowmik and Sepal Sen are also benefiting from the scheme. Motivated by their success, Dr. Kaushik Bhowmik, a homeopathy doctor from Satmura, has decided to install a solar plant with bank support.
At a recent awareness camp held in the Rajnagar constituency of Belonia, 58 applicants including farmers, rubber growers, and auto-rickshaw drivers registered to avail the scheme’s benefits. The rooftop systems can be installed on concrete roofs, tin sheds, or even open yards, making them accessible to households in both urban and remote areas.
Subsidy and Cost Breakdown:
1 kW System: ₹65,000–₹75,000 | Subsidy: ₹33,000 2 kW System: ₹1.3–₹1.55 lakh | Subsidy: ₹66,000 3 kW System: ₹1.9–₹2.2 lakh | Subsidy: ₹85,800 Up to 10 kW systems allowed for domestic use with a maximum subsidy of ₹85,000.
