Tripura, 11 June 2025: The ongoing issue of illegal cattle smuggling in North Tripura has once again come to light after Pecharthal Police intercepted a vehicle loaded with cattle on Tuesday. This time, the smugglers were found transporting ten indigenous cows in a highly inhumane manner, using a single “Magic” goods vehicle without valid documentation.
The vehicle, bearing registration number TR02K-1934, was stopped at a police checkpoint near Pecharthal while en route from Dharmanagar to Fatikroy. Upon inspection, officers found that the truck was overloaded and lacked any legal permits for transporting livestock. Consequently, the police detained the driver and his assistant.

The accused have been identified as Shahin Islam (20) and Shamsul Islam, both residents of the Fatikroy area. Following their arrest, Pecharthal Police registered a formal case and transferred the rescued cattle to the Dharmanagar Gurukshanath Gaushala for shelter.
Station Officer Suman Chatterjee stated that similar operations will continue in the coming days to curb illegal activities in the region. However, the incident has sparked serious questions regarding the effectiveness—and integrity of law enforcement in North Tripura.
Locals and observers are raising concerns about how the cattle-laden vehicle managed to pass through several police jurisdictions, including Dharmanagar, Bagbasa, and Panisagar, without being stopped. This has led to growing suspicions of possible collusion between smugglers and certain elements within the district police.
The case underscores the need for a coordinated crackdown on cattle smuggling and a transparent review of law enforcement accountability across the region.
