Tripura, 09 June 2025: Even amid ongoing police operations, the illegal drug trade shows no signs of slowing down in Kumarghat subdivision of Unakoti district, Tripura. In a recent development, two drug peddlers were arrested at the North Pabiachhara naka gate checkpoint while attempting to transport brown sugar.
The incident took place on Sunday when police intercepted a battery-operated auto (registration number TR02 C3063) en route from Pencharthal to Kumarghat. During a routine search, officers recovered 23.25 grams of brown sugar hidden inside two soap cases. Additionally, ₹35,500 in cash and two mobile phones were seized from the vehicle.
According to police, the arrested individuals have been identified as Akash Chandra Deb (24) and Sanideb (25), both residents of Paiturbazar area in Kailashahar, Unakoti district. Preliminary investigation suggests the duo was involved in drug trafficking. A case has been registered against them under the NDPS Act, and legal proceedings have begun at Kumarghat police station.
Kumarghat Officer-in-Charge Sanjay Das stated that the accused will be produced before the Kailashahar district court on Monday.
Local residents praised the police for the operation but expressed concern over the persistent inflow of drugs into the region despite frequent raids. They emphasized the need for more sustained and widespread efforts to root out the drug menace.
Authorities, on their part, have assured that the drive to create a drug-free society will continue with full force.
