Agartala, Jan 15: Bowing to sustained protests by lawyers, the state government has transferred Sabroom Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Nagar Panchayat Executive Officer Abhijit Singh Yadav (IAS), effectively accepting the Bar Association’s demand.
Yadav has been shifted to the Agartala Sadar Revenue Section, while Suman Rakshit has been appointed as the new SDM of Sabroom and Executive Officer of the Sabroom Nagar Panchayat. Following the transfer order, lawyers have announced a return to work, ending the indefinite boycott.
The protest was triggered by allegations that the IAS officer verbally abused and issued death threats to senior advocate Ratan Nath during a hearing on January 7 at a temporary courtroom inside the Nagar Panchayat building. Nath stated that in his 22 years of legal practice, he had never experienced such conduct.
Reacting strongly, the Sabroom Bar Association launched an indefinite boycott of the SDM’s court and registry work from January 12. The decision was taken during an emergency meeting held on January 9.
Bar Association Secretary Advocate Apon Datta said the protest was aimed at protecting the dignity of the judiciary and demanded a fair and impartial inquiry by the administration.
An FIR has been registered against the officer. On Monday, lawyers staged demonstrations within the Sabroom court premises, warning that the agitation would spread across Tripura if strict action was not taken.

The government’s transfer order is being seen as a direct outcome of mounting pressure from the legal fraternity, though further administrative action is awaited.
