New Delhi, May 2 (SHABD): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic demise of a Nepali student at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar. The student, a first-year B.Tech (Computer Science) undergraduate, was reportedly found dead in her hostel room on the evening of April 30. The Odisha Police is currently investigating the incident as an alleged suicide. According to an official press release from the Information and Public Relations Department, Government of Odisha, local police received information about the incident at around 8:10 PM on May 1.


University authorities promptly informed the girl’s parents. Senior state officials, including the Commissioner of Police and the Revenue Divisional Commissioner, visited the site to oversee the investigation. A forensic team has also been deployed to collect evidence. The MEA, in its statement, said it has been in continuous touch with the Odisha State Government since the incident occurred. The Ministry reiterated that the Government of India is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all international students. It further stated that it is coordinating closely with the Government of Nepal, the Odisha authorities, and KIIT University. Meanwhile, the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi issued a formal statement expressing deep grief over the death of the student, identified as Trisha Shah.
The Embassy confirmed it has remained in close contact with the university administration, the Odisha Government, and Indian authorities. The Nepali mission extended condolences to the family and stated that necessary support is being provided. The Embassy also noted it had dispatched representatives to KIIT to gather more information and ensure that proper diplomatic protocols and assistance are being followed. Ambassador Dr. Shankar Sharma has personally conveyed condolences to Indian officials, including those in the Ministry of External Affairs and the Chief Minister’s Office.
The case has sparked concerns about the mental well-being and support systems available for international students in India’s private universities.
