Agartala, May 23: In a major anti-smuggling operation, police from Mungiakami Police Station seized a huge consignment of suspected Burmese cigarettes from the 41 Mile naka point on the Assam-Agartala National Highway on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a vehicle travelling from Damchhara towards Agartala and conducted a thorough search. The vehicle, bearing registration number TR04 F0750, was found carrying around 2.10 lakh packets of suspected Burmese cigarettes packed inside 21 carton boxes.

According to police sources, the estimated market value of the seized contraband runs into several lakhs of rupees.
Police have detained one person along with the vehicle in connection with the case. Interrogation is underway to identify others involved in the smuggling network.

Speaking on the matter, Officer-in-Charge Raju Baidya said the seizure was made during a special naka operation based on confidential information. He further stated that such intensified drives against smuggling activities in border areas would continue in the coming days.
