Dharmanagar, Mar 20. Retired Major Brij Gopal Debnath, an independent candidate, submitted his nomination today for the Agartala 18–Suryamaninagar by-election.
Speaking to journalists, Debnath highlighted issues of OBC reservation and mismanagement in education and public services.
Debnath, a retired engineer, pointed out that while Tripura has a 33% OBC population around 14 lakh out of 40 lakh, his community receives no reservation. “SCs, STs, and Muslims have their share. Where is ours?” he questioned.
He criticized political parties for ignoring citizens’ demands, claiming they often act opposite to what people want. “Reservation and caste discrimination are being worsened, schools are closing or being privatized, and poor students are struggling to access education,” he said.
Debnath also raised concerns about health, sports, and public infrastructure, blaming mismanagement and government corruption for widening inequalities. “Millions of crores are being misused while people die of hunger. This money belongs to us earned by our labour. Current politicians fail to see this,” he added.
A retired engineer with higher education degrees, Debnath emphasized that his independent candidacy aims to challenge the system that overlooks communities like his.
