Khowai, Mar 18: Police seized ganja worth around ₹20 lakh from an abandoned vehicle after suspected traffickers fled during naka checking in Tripura’s Khowai district on Wednesday.
According to Khowai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Krishnadhan Sarkar, police signalled a goods vehicle coming from Chebri to stop near Mahadev Tilla. The driver sped away, prompting a chase along National Highway 208.
The vehicle was later found abandoned in a roadside drain near Chebri Veterinary Hospital, with the occupants fleeing the spot. During a search, police recovered 96.5 kg of dry ganja packed in 47 packets, concealed in a specially built hidden chamber inside the vehicle.
The seized vehicle, bearing registration number TR01AP1907, is suspected to have a fake number plate.
In a related incident a day earlier, a luxury vehicle caught fire in the Behalabari area under Khowai subdivision. Firefighters controlled the blaze, and subsequent inspection revealed a large quantity of ganja hidden in a secret compartment.
Police have registered a case under the NDPS Act and launched an investigation to identify those involved. Officials said traffickers are increasingly using innovative methods to smuggle contraband, making enforcement more challenging.
