Tripura, March 15: In a humanitarian gesture, Teliamura MLA and Government Chief Whip of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Kalyani Roy, has extended financial assistance to a five-month-old child suffering from a rare and serious heart condition.
The infant, Sarnajit Biswas, son of Samir Biswas and Saraswati Biswas of the Rajnagar area in Teliamura, has been battling a critical heart ailment since birth. According to doctors, the child has been diagnosed with a hole in the heart and requires urgent advanced medical treatment outside the state.
After conducting preliminary examinations, doctors at GBP Hospital in Agartala advised the family to seek specialized treatment at a higher medical facility. Following medical consultation, the infant was referred to the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children in Chennai under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) scheme.
Although the treatment cost may be covered under the scheme, the financially distressed family expressed their inability to arrange funds for travel, accommodation and other related expenses. According to the family, the estimated cost of the trip to Chennai and the stay during treatment would exceed Rs 1.5 lakh, which they could not afford.
The family’s plight came to light after several media reports highlighted their difficult situation. Moved by the reports, MLA Kalyani Roy contacted the family and invited them to her residence in Teliamura on Sunday.
During the meeting, the child’s father shared the challenges they were facing in arranging the required funds to travel to Chennai for the life-saving treatment. After listening to their concerns, Roy assured the family of her full support.
Demonstrating compassion and responsibility, the MLA announced that she would personally bear the expenses for the family’s travel and accommodation in Chennai to ensure that the child receives timely medical care. The family is now preparing to travel to Chennai on Wednesday for the treatment.
