Agartala, 13 March 2026: The Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday expressed deep condolence over the demise of former Speaker of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly, Bishwabandhu Sen. Members of the Assembly observed a two-minute silence to pay homage to the departed leader.
Following the condolence reference, Acting Speaker Ramprasad Paul announced that the Assembly proceedings would remain adjourned till 11:00 AM on March 16 as a mark of respect.
Remembering the late leader, Acting Speaker Ramprasad Paul said that Bishwabandhu Sen passed away in the early hours of December 26, 2025, while undergoing treatment. He was 72 years old at the time of his demise.
Paul stated that with Sen’s untimely demise, the state’s political sphere and the Tripura Legislative Assembly have lost a wise guardian, an experienced parliamentary personality, and a dedicated public leader. The people of the state also lost a trusted and beloved representative.
During his tenure as Speaker, Bishwabandhu Sen set a remarkable example in maintaining parliamentary discipline, ensuring neutrality in the conduct of Assembly proceedings, and giving fair opportunities to all members to express their views.
Apart from being a distinguished parliamentary figure, he was also widely respected as a lover of culture. A passionate admirer of Rabindra Sangeet, Sen had a deep interest in theatre and traditional Jatra performances and had also acted in plays and Jatra productions himself. He consistently encouraged the growth of theatre and cultural activities in the state. He was also fond of writing rhymes and poems.
His courtesy, tolerance, and dignified behaviour earned him respect from people across all sections of society. With the passing of such a distinguished parliamentary leader, cultural enthusiast, and public-spirited personality, the Tripura Legislative Assembly has lost a capable guide, an impartial guardian, and a compassionate leader.
Acting Speaker Ramprasad Paul prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.
