Tripura, 13 March 2026: Tension gripped the Deorachhara area of Kailashahar after a 65-year-old man died following his arrest by police late Thursday night. Family members of the deceased have accused the police of beating him to death while in custody.
The deceased, Monir Mia, a resident of Ward No. 3 of Deorachhara ADC Village under Gournagar Block in Kailashahar, was a daily wage labourer by profession.
According to family sources, a non-bailable arrest warrant had recently been issued by a court against Monir Mia for allegedly failing to provide maintenance to his divorced wife. Acting on the warrant, police from Kailashahar Police Station reportedly arrived at his residence around 2:00 AM on Thursday night and took him into custody.
Family members alleged that the police personnel who came to arrest him were intoxicated and behaved abusively with both Monir Mia and his family. They further claimed that although Monir Mia was taken away in a healthy condition, he was allegedly severely beaten inside the police vehicle.
Around 3:00 AM, police reportedly informed the family over the phone that Monir Mia had fallen ill and had been taken to the Unakoti District Hospital, asking them to come there. However, when the family reached the hospital in the morning, they were informed that Monir Mia had already died.
Hospital sources stated that Monir Mia was brought to the hospital at 3:15 AM, admitted for treatment, and later died around 4:40 AM.
The news of his death quickly spread, drawing a large crowd of villagers from Deorachhara to the hospital premises. The situation became tense as relatives and locals expressed anger over the incident.
When questioned, the Officer-in-Charge of Kailashahar Police Station, Tapas Malakar, said he could not comment on the matter without departmental permission.
Meanwhile, the attending doctor at the hospital declined to comment and reportedly behaved rudely with journalists who sought information about the case.
The body of Monir Mia will be handed over to the family after post-mortem examination, officials said.
The family has announced that they will submit a written complaint to the Superintendent of Police of Unakoti district, demanding a thorough investigation.
Relatives of the deceased have openly alleged that Monir Mia died due to police torture and beating after being taken into custody, and have demanded justice for his death.
