Tripura, 11 March 2026: An incident involving the alleged assault of a school teacher in Baijalbari of Khowai district has triggered widespread debate and concern across the education community and on social media. The incident reportedly took place in front of Mudibari Rangkharbari Lower Basic School under Baijalbari Police Station.
The injured teacher has been identified as Biswajit Roy, who is currently serving at a school in the Baijalbari area and had earlier worked at Ratanpur Higher Secondary School.
According to police sources, on the day of the incident Roy had reportedly dropped his wife at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala, from where she was scheduled to fly to Kolkata. While returning toward Khowai, he stopped near Mudibari school where a Class XI student, known to him as his student, requested a lift to Khowai.
However, as the student was about to get into the vehicle, several local men and women reportedly gathered at the spot, raised suspicions, and confronted the teacher. According to allegations, the crowd then dragged him out of the vehicle and assaulted him on the school grounds.
In her statement to the police, the student reportedly tried to explain the situation but was also allegedly manhandled during the confrontation.
Police from Baijalbari Police Station quickly reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Officer-in-Charge Jugal Tripura said that if police had not arrived on time, the situation could have turned more serious for both the teacher and the student.
Both individuals were later taken for medical examination, police confirmed.
However, authorities said that no written complaint has been filed yet either by the teacher or by the student’s family.
Viral Video and Allegations Fuel Debate
Meanwhile, a video of the incident has gone viral on social media, leading to heated discussions and multiple narratives about what actually happened.
A section of local residents alleged that the teacher was seen bringing a young woman, believed to be his student, in his vehicle, which led to anger among some members of the public who confronted him.
Some critics on social media have also questioned the teacher’s explanation that he was returning after dropping his wife at the airport, accusing him of trying to defend himself through what they claim are misleading stories circulating online.
On the other hand, many members of the teaching community and civil society have expressed concern over the incident, arguing that even if suspicions existed, mob violence against a teacher is unacceptable and that the matter should have been handled legally.
Investigation Awaited
Police officials stated that the truth behind the incident will only be determined after a proper investigation. Authorities have urged people not to spread unverified claims and to allow law enforcement agencies to examine the matter carefully.
Despite the controversy, Biswajit Roy has reportedly not filed any case against the attackers so far.
The incident has sparked a wider debate in Tripura about respect for teachers, the dangers of mob justice, and the importance of verifying facts before drawing conclusions. Many observers say the case highlights growing tensions in society and the need for responsible public behavior while dealing with sensitive situations.
