Assam, 10 March 2026: Despite strict directives from the Chief Minister against illegal cattle slaughter and beef trade, the unlawful sale of beef continues in parts of Cachar district. In a fresh incident, local residents in Sonai Assembly constituency detained two alleged illegal beef sellers after catching them in possession of beef and cattle.
The incident occurred on Sunday at Syedpur Third Part under the Sonai area, where tension prevailed following the operation carried out by villagers.
The detained individuals have been identified as Saharul Islam Laskar and Fakhrul Islam Laskar, both residents of Syedpur Third Part. According to local sources, the two had allegedly been involved in selling prohibited beef in the area for a long time.
Residents claimed that despite repeated objections from the local community, the accused continued their illegal activities without fear. Eventually, members of both Hindu and Muslim communities united and launched a joint action against the alleged illegal trade.
After receiving information, police and paramilitary forces rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Authorities recovered a quantity of beef and two cattle from the location. The two accused were later taken into custody by the police for further investigation.
The incident briefly created a tense atmosphere in the area before security forces restored normalcy.
