Agartala: Jan 10: The CPI(M) on Saturday accused the Narendra Modi-led central government of pushing communal politics by renaming MGNREGA as the “G Ram G” project and steadily weakening the flagship rural employment scheme through budget cuts.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s Kailashahar subdivision office, senior CPI(M) state committee leader Tapan Chakraborty said MGNREGA has been a lifeline for rural workers and alleged the Centre is undermining it without repealing the law. He claimed reduced allocations have directly affected livelihoods, calling the move “anti-people.”
Chakraborty said MGNREGA, enacted during the UPA regime under pressure from Left MPs, ensured 100 days of work and benefited millions of rural households. He recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier criticism of the scheme and questioned why corporate loans are waived while welfare funds are curtailed. The CPI(M) announced village- and market-level awareness campaigns across Tripura against the BJP government’s policies.
The party also raised concerns over recent communal tensions in Shimultali under Fatikroy Assembly constituency. District secretary Krishnendu Choudhury alleged attacks on minority households, mosques, and local shops, demanding strict action against those responsible.
State committee member Bishwarup Goswami termed the violence a deliberate attempt to disturb communal harmony, urging the administration to act firmly and citizens to maintain peace.
