Tripura 18 March, 2025: The ‘Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ will help in electricity conservation and increase household income, said Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath at the inauguration of the scheme’s registration camp at Ranirgaon School premises in Jirania subdivision on 17 March.
Urging everyone to take advantage of the scheme, he emphasized that its primary goal is to enable residential families to generate their own electricity by utilizing their rooftops. The minister stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched this scheme on February 13, 2024, for the benefit of every electricity consumer in the country.

Under this scheme, government subsidies are provided based on the capacity of the solar plant installed. A subsidy of up to ₹85,800 is being given for a 3 kW solar plant. For a 1 kW solar plant, which costs ₹65,000, a subsidy of ₹33,000 is provided, while for a 2 kW solar plant, which costs around ₹1,30,000, a subsidy of ₹66,000 is given.
He further explained that a 1 kW solar plant generates approximately 100 units of electricity per month, which not only helps in reducing household electricity costs but also allows families to sell excess power and earn additional income.
The minister highlighted that solar plants can be installed on rooftops, courtyards, or even tin roofs, and each plant has a lifespan of approximately 25 years.
To encourage people to benefit from this scheme, registration camps are being set up across various locations in the state. The state government has set a target of installing 50,000 solar plants in the current financial year, and so far, 12,800 solar plants have been successfully installed.
The event was attended by Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury as the special guest. Other dignitaries present included West Tripura Zilla Parishad Vice-Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil, Jirania Nagar Panchayat Chairperson Ratan Kumar Das, Jirania Panchayat Samiti Chairman Pritam Debnath, and social worker Gouranga Bhowmik.
During the event, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath interacted with Sadhan Baidya, the first beneficiary of the scheme in Tripura, and discussed the benefits of the solar plant installation. He also visited the registration camp stalls.
