Agartala, Mar 21. In a politically significant development ahead of the ADC elections, 127 voters from 40 families in East Garji Chhara ADC Village quit the BJP and joined the CPI(M) on Saturday.
The joining took place around 4 pm at Rangachandra Para village under Garji outpost, in the presence of former minister Ratan Bhowmik and CPI(M) sub-divisional secretary Dilip Dutta. Local leader Shankar Das was also present as the newcomers were formally welcomed into the party.
The defectors alleged that they had seen no benefits despite supporting the ruling party for nearly eight years, forcing them to switch sides. They further claimed that several more families are waiting to leave the BJP in the coming days.
Political observers believe the development could be a setback for the BJP, especially with the TTAADC elections approaching, as the CPI(M) appears to be regaining ground in the area.
