Killa: Mar 18. Gomati District Hospital (GDH) has successfully conducted its first surgery using an advanced ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia technique, allowing a high-risk patient to remain awake and pain-free throughout the procedure.
The breakthrough was achieved by the hospital’s Anaesthesiology Department during the operation of 34-year-old Ruma Das from Tepania Panna Chowmuhuni, who was diagnosed with a medial shaft clavicle fracture. The case was considered high-risk due to her uncontrolled hypertension, which can significantly increase complications under general anaesthesia.
To minimise these risks, the medical team opted for a regional anaesthesia approach instead of full sedation. The procedure involved a dual-layer nerve block performed under ultrasound (USG) guidance, enabling precise delivery of anaesthesia.
According to anaesthesiologist Dr. Moutushi Choudhury, the patient remained completely awake and experienced no pain during the surgery.
Surgeon Dr. Amar Tripura stated that the technique combined an interscalene block, targeting the brachial plexus to numb the shoulder and arm, with a superficial cervical plexus block to ensure full coverage around the collarbone area.
Doctors said the use of real-time ultrasound imaging allowed accurate identification of nerves, reducing the risk of complications. Throughout the surgery, the patient remained hemodynamically stable, with no fluctuations in blood pressure.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Kajal Kumar Das described the procedure as a significant clinical milestone for the hospital, noting that such modern anaesthetic techniques enhance patient safety and reduce recovery time.
Hospital officials said the success marks a step forward in expanding advanced surgical care at GDH, particularly for patients with underlying health risks.
