India defeat New Zealand by 96 runs in Ahmedabad final to win third T20 World Cup title and become the first team to defend the trophy
Ahmedabad, March 8, 2026: India etched their name in cricket history on Sunday by becoming the first team to win back-to-back ICC Men’s T20 World Cup titles. The Men in Blue defeated New Zealand by a massive 96-run margin in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The victory also marked another historic milestone as India became the first host nation to win the T20 World Cup, while securing their third title after 2007 and 2024.
Batting first after New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to field, India produced a record-breaking batting display. The hosts piled up 255 for 5 in 20 overs, the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final.

Openers Abhishek Sharma (52) and Ishan Kishan (54) laid a strong foundation with a blistering 98-run powerplay partnership. Their aggressive start set the tone for India’s massive total.
Middle-order batter Sanju Samson delivered a spectacular performance, smashing 89 runs off just 46 balls, including a memorable hat-trick of sixes against Rachin Ravindra. His innings anchored India’s batting with both elegance and power.

In the final overs, Shivam Dube provided explosive finishing touches, scoring 26 not out off only 8 balls, including 24 runs in the last over bowled by James Neesham, pushing India beyond the 250-run mark.
Chasing a daunting 256-run target, New Zealand struggled to build momentum. Tim Seifert (52) fought hard, but wickets kept falling regularly under relentless pressure from India’s bowling attack.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell, claiming 4 wickets for just 15 runs, while Axar Patel added 3 for 27 to dismantle the New Zealand middle order. The Black Caps were eventually bowled out for 159 in 19 overs.
The emphatic victory erased the painful memories of the 2023 ODI World Cup final defeat at the same venue and sparked celebrations among the 86,000 spectators inside the stadium.
With this triumph, Suryakumar Yadav joins the elite list of Indian captains MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to lift the T20 World Cup trophy.
India’s dominant campaign throughout the tournament showcased fearless batting, disciplined bowling, and outstanding fielding, cementing their status as the most dominant team in modern T20 cricket.
For New Zealand, the defeat extends their long wait for a limited-overs World Cup title despite consistently reaching major finals in recent years.
