Khowai: Mar 04: A 38-year-old man was allegedly beaten so brutally by a shop owner over an unpaid Rs 500 that his right leg was broken, police said today. The incident took place in the Ramchandra Ghat area under Khowai district.
The injured man, identified as Manik Hrishidas, a resident of Lama Para in East Ramchandra Ghat, is currently undergoing treatment at Khowai District Hospital.
Speaking to reporters from his hospital bed, he alleged that the shop owner, Papon Das, along with several others, assaulted him inside a house in the locality on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Manik, he had been purchasing goods on credit from a grocery store in Ramchandra Ghat and would repay the dues in installments. However, around Rs 500 remained unpaid. He alleged that the shop owner attacked him over the pending amount, leaving him with a fractured leg.
The victim further claimed that he was threatened with dire consequences if he approached the police.
He said the accused warned that he would be killed and his body disposed of if a case was filed.
Manik further stated that he plans to lodge a formal complaint and has demanded strict action against those involved.
Police are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
