Dharmanagar, March 02: An online Fishery Insurance Awareness Programme was organised at the Fisheries Department Training Centre in Dharmanagar on Monday to inform fish farmers about newly introduced insurance benefits under the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Government of India.
The programme, conducted under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY), aimed to educate farmers about the online fishery insurance scheme designed to safeguard their aquaculture assets.
The awareness session was initially held virtually through a video conference from 3 pm to 4 pm, followed by a formal inauguration with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Zilla Sabhadhipati Aparna Nath in the presence of district officials.
Deputy Director of Fisheries of North Tripura, Animesh Chakma addressed the gathering and explained that the insurance scheme would provide financial protection to fish farmers against unforeseen losses, including deliberate poisoning of ponds or intentional damage to fisheries assets.
Officials stated that this is the first time such a structured insurance coverage has been made available to fish farmers in the state, enabling them to expand fish cultivation without fear of financial ruin due to sabotage or other risks.
The scheme allows insured farmers to claim compensation in case of verified losses, thereby encouraging secure and sustainable aquaculture practices.
Among those present were Fisheries Superintendent Ankana Dey of Dharmanagar, Fisheries Superintendent Kamal Hossain of Panisagar, and other departmental officials.
The initiative is expected to strengthen confidence among fish farmers and promote growth in the fisheries sector across North Tripura.
