From crowded city streets to quiet spiritual centres, celebrations unfolded across the country despite dense fog in the north, unseasonal showers in parts of the west, and biting cold in several regions. Tight security arrangements and traffic controls ensured that festivities remained largely peaceful and well-managed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended New Year greetings to the nation, praying for peace, prosperity, good health, and fulfillment for all. Chief Ministers and leaders across states echoed similar messages, underlining hopes for harmony and progress in the year ahead.
North India
In New Delhi, iconic locations such as Connaught Place and India Gate witnessed large crowds for countdowns and fireworks. Chilly temperatures and thick fog kept some residents indoors, while police deployed thousands of personnel and enforced strict drunk-driving checks.
Across Uttar Pradesh, devotees thronged Varanasi for the famed Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where 1,001 lamps lit up the riverfront with “Swagatam 2026.” Vrindavan saw heavy footfall at the Banke Bihari Temple as devotees offered prayers for the new year.
In Himachal Pradesh, Shimla hosted a lively Winter Carnival at the Ridge, while Manali and Dharamshala welcomed tourists enjoying snow, bonfires, and music. Snow-covered landscapes also set the mood in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg.
In Punjab, the Golden Temple in Amritsar overflowed with devotees offering midnight prayers for peace and prosperity.

Maharashtra welcomed 2026 amid light drizzles. Mumbai’s Marine Drive and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus lit up with fireworks, while late-night celebrations continued under extended permissions.
Goa lived up to its party reputation as fireworks sparkled over the Arabian Sea. Beaches at Calangute, Baga, and Vagator were packed with revellers, with traffic managed through extra police deployment.
In Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior hosted Bollywood-themed music, dance, and fireworks. Rajasthan saw royal celebrations in Jaipur and Udaipur, with heritage hotels reporting full occupancy.
South India
In Karnataka, Bengaluru’s Brigade Road, MG Road, and Indiranagar buzzed with street parties and live DJs, backed by strong safety measures.
Tamil Nadu saw crowds gather at Kanyakumari’s Mukkadal Sangamam for the first sunrise of 2026. Chennai marked the day with temple prayers and beach gatherings under heightened security.
Festivities were equally vibrant in Telangana, with Hyderabad hosting music and fireworks, while Kerala lit up Thiruvananthapuram’s Kanakakkunnu Palace grounds with its annual Light Festival. In Andhra Pradesh, beaches, temples, and cities witnessed community prayers and celebrations.
