Agartala, August 4: In a major boost to media education in Tripura, Tripura University has introduced a new Undergraduate (UG) Programme in Journalism and Mass Communication under the Institute of Multidisciplinary Studies (IMD) for the 2026–27 academic session.
The programme aims to prepare students for careers in journalism, digital media, filmmaking, photography, advertising, public relations, corporate communication, broadcasting, and content creation through a multidisciplinary and industry-oriented curriculum.
The initiative has been approved under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Debabrata Das, reflecting the university’s commitment to expanding skill-based, multidisciplinary, and employment-focused higher education.
According to the university, the programme is the result of sustained efforts by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication to introduce professional media education at the undergraduate level. Dr. Sunil Kalai, Head of the Department, has consistently advocated for providing journalism education immediately after higher secondary education so that students can develop practical media skills early in their academic careers.
Since the launch of the postgraduate programme in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2009, the department has expanded its academic and professional footprint through curriculum development, industry collaborations, documentary filmmaking, digital journalism, photography, research, and community engagement. Its alumni are currently working in print, television, digital media, public relations, government communication, academia, filmmaking, and development sectors across India.
The newly introduced UG programme will offer practical training in reporting, multimedia storytelling, mobile journalism, photography, video production, podcasting, advertising, public relations, digital marketing, media entrepreneurship, communication research, and the application of artificial intelligence in media.
With digital platforms and the creative economy witnessing rapid growth, the programme is expected to provide students with both a strong academic foundation and promising career opportunities in the evolving media industry.

The launch of the programme marks a significant milestone in Tripura University’s academic expansion and is expected to strengthen professional media education in the state while nurturing the next generation of media professionals.
