Khowai, June 27: Ongoing drainage construction work in Khowai town has severely disrupted daily movement, with residents facing difficulties even while walking through several areas. The situation has reportedly worsened due to the mushrooming of temporary plastic goods stalls occupying roads and public spaces.
According to local residents, several key locations, including Vivekananda Smarani and the Nipen Chakraborty Avenue area, have been encroached upon by roadside plastic vendors, leaving little space for pedestrians and vehicles. Traffic congestion has become a daily occurrence, particularly during the evening and night hours.
Residents have alleged that the Khowai Municipal Council has remained silent despite repeated complaints. They claim no effective action has been taken to clear the encroachments or ease the growing traffic problem.
Concerns have also been raised over the quality and safety of plastic products being sold in these temporary markets. Locals questioned whether the products meet the required quality standards and regulatory approvals, alleging that low-cost, substandard plastic items are being sold, potentially posing health risks to consumers.
Meanwhile, the traffic authorities have also come under criticism for their alleged inaction. Some residents further claimed that influential traders are backing these temporary roadside stalls, allowing the encroachments to continue unchecked.
As public frustration grows, residents are urging the concerned authorities to remove illegal encroachments, restore smooth traffic movement, and ensure that products sold in the market comply with prescribed safety and quality standards.
