Agartala, May 30: The Tripura Guerrilla Returnees Demand Committee (TGRDC) has announced an indefinite blockade of the Assam-Agartala National Highway and railway line beginning June 5, alleging that the state government failed to fulfill assurances made regarding their long-pending demands.
Addressing a press conference at Kumaritila Rupashree Abasan in Agartala on Friday, committee leaders said they had earlier planned a similar agitation on February 20, 2026. However, the movement was withdrawn after a meeting with Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, who reportedly assured them that their grievances would be addressed.
According to the committee, a rehabilitation scheme worth ₹45 crore, introduced during the previous Left Front government to improve the livelihood of surrendered guerrillas, remained operational until 2017 but was later discontinued. Leaders alleged that despite assurances from the minister in February, no concrete action has been taken over the past four months.
The organization said it had again approached the government on May 19 and set May 29 as a deadline for a response. With no progress reported, the committee has decided to launch an indefinite blockade of both road and rail routes from June 5.
Committee representatives stated that their key demands include the revival of rubber plantation schemes, payment of pending fencing assistance to beneficiaries, implementation of piggery and goatery development schemes, and withdrawal of pending cases against former guerrillas who returned to normal life.
Appealing to Chief Minister Manik Saha to intervene, the leaders said they remain committed to a peaceful resolution but would proceed with the agitation if no dialogue is initiated before June 5.
The committee warned that the blockade would continue indefinitely until their demands are addressed by the state government.
