Agartala, May 17:
A social media content creator and mobile phone shop owner was arrested by Amtali police in Agartala on charges of rape following a complaint lodged by a young woman, police officials said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Aditya Das, was arrested late on Saturday night after the victim approached the West Agartala Women Police Station with a written complaint. Police sources said Das is locally known as a content creator on social media and owns two mobile phone shops in Agartala.
According to the complaint, the victim came into contact with the accused through Facebook several months ago. Their online interaction gradually turned into regular conversations. The accused allegedly gained her trust and promised to gift her an expensive iPhone, following which he persuaded her to meet him in Agartala.
Police said the woman had arrived in Agartala by train on Saturday morning to purchase medicines. When she reached Badharghat Railway Station, the accused allegedly picked her up on a motorcycle. Though he reportedly told her they would go elsewhere, he later allegedly took her to a hotel near the railway station.
The complainant alleged that the accused forcibly raped her inside a hotel room. She further claimed that he assaulted her physically when she resisted. According to the complaint, the accused also allegedly took away her mobile phone before leaving the hotel and threatened her with serious consequences.
After managing to leave the hotel premises, the victim approached the West Agartala Women Police Station and lodged a formal complaint.
Acting swiftly, a police team led by Inspector Shiuli Das, Officer-in-Charge of the Women Police Station, conducted a raid at one of the accused’s mobile phone shops near Laxminarayan Bari in Agartala on Saturday night. Aditya Das was detained from the shop and later handed over to Amtali Police Station.
Police sources said the accused originally hails from Kamalpur and currently resides at Gangail Road in Agartala. He reportedly owns mobile phone shops at Siddhi Ashram and near Laxminarayan Bari. Police also confirmed that the accused is married and has children.
A case has been registered at Amtali Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Inspector Paritosh Das said the accused was formally arrested around 2 am on Sunday and produced before the court later in the day.
