Tripura, 15 May 2026: Even as the state government continues its campaign for a “Drug-Free Tripura,” a major controversy erupted on Friday after the son of a ruling party district president was arrested in connection with an alleged drug racket.
Khowai police arrested Saikat Debbarma, son of Khowai district BJP president Binoy Debbarma, along with his associate Amitabh Debbarma, after recovering brown sugar from their possession.

Acting on a secret tip-off, police conducted a raid around 12 noon at Binoy Debbarma’s old residence in the Lalchhara area under Khowai police station. After a detailed search operation, police allegedly recovered 3.24 grams of brown sugar ₹5,000 in cash and Two mobile phones.
According to local sources, Saikat Debbarma had allegedly been involved in drug trafficking in the area for a long time and was reportedly using his father’s political influence as protection. Sources also claimed that he had previously been detained in narcotics-related cases but was released on earlier occasions under unclear circumstances.
