Agartala, May 10: In a significant success against mobile theft and loss cases, the police of Tripura Police recovered 35 missing and stolen mobile phones and handed them over to their rightful owners on Sunday at West Agartala Police Station.
The recovered devices included several high-end smartphones such as the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple iPhone 16 and multiple premium models from Samsung and other brands.
According to West Agartala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rana Chatterjee, the phones were traced and recovered within one to two months of complaints being lodged. Police used the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal along with technical analysis and human intelligence to track the devices from different locations.
“We are handing over 35 missing mobile phones to their actual owners today. These phones had gone missing from different parts of Agartala over the past one or two months. Using the CEIR portal and technical analysis, along with human intelligence in some difficult cases like iPhones, we were able to recover them,” the OC said.
He added that most of the cases involved lost phones rather than confirmed thefts, as many complainants were unsure whether the devices had been stolen or accidentally misplaced in markets, vehicles, or public places.
One woman, who recovered her phone after losing it in January, expressed gratitude to the police.
“I never imagined I would get my phone back so quickly. I received a call from West PS informing me that my mobile had been found. I am extremely thankful to the department for their fast action,” she said.
A senior citizen whose phone went missing at Lake Chowmuhani Market on December 7 also praised the efforts of the police.
“I thought I would never get my mobile phone back. After filing a report, I later received information that the phone had been recovered. Thanks to modern technology and the sincere efforts of the police department, I finally got it back,” he said.
While the recovery of missing phones has been widely appreciated, questions remain over the absence of arrests in many such cases despite successful recovery operations. Nevertheless, the initiative has boosted public confidence in the efforts of Tripura Police to trace and return lost devices to citizens.
