Khowai, Mar 05: Tension gripped the Ramchandra Ghat area of Khowai after BJP’s Ramchandra Ghat Mandal leaders accused workers of the Tipra Motha party of assaulting BJP Yuva Morcha president Rupak Ghosh at his residence on Thursday morning.
A complaint regarding the incident has been lodged at Khowai Police Station.
According to BJP leaders, a group of Tipra Motha supporters allegedly went to Ghosh’s house and attacked him in an attempt to disrupt a bike rally scheduled to be organised by the Ramchandra Ghat Mandal on March 8.
Mandal president Sukesh Debbarma and secretary Manoj Das claimed the assault was politically motivated and aimed at sabotaging the planned rally.
Following the incident, Ghosh was first taken to Khowai District Hospital for treatment and later referred to GB Hospital for advanced medical care. Reports also suggest that several people from both sides sustained injuries during the clash.
However, Tipra Motha workers strongly denied the allegations. Speaking to reporters later in the day, they said they had visited Ghosh’s residence to discuss matters related to contract work and the fair distribution of work opportunities in the area.
According to them, an argument broke out during the discussion when Ghosh allegedly became agitated and behaved aggressively with the visitors, which eventually led to a physical altercation between both sides.
Tipra Motha members claimed the incident was not political in nature and accused BJP workers of giving it a political colour by falsely blaming their party.
Police have registered the complaint and the matter is under investigation.
