In a major step toward wildlife protection, Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma on Tuesday announced that the state government will construct four dedicated elephant passes at Mungiakami in Khowai district to ensure the safe movement of elephant herds.
Mungiakami, located along the foothills of the Hachuk Berem (Atharamura) range, has already been notified as an official elephant corridor. The initiative gained urgency following the death of two elephants in 2024 after they were struck by speeding trains in the area, raising serious concerns over wildlife safety amid expanding railway and road infrastructure.
The minister informed that preparations are underway for drafting a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed passes. He indicated that additional structures may be considered in the future depending on the movement patterns of elephant herds.
Highlighting the growing challenge of human-animal conflict, Debbarma stressed the importance of adopting scientific and long-term measures. He said the Forest Department would advocate for dedicated wildlife protection provisions while granting clearances for major infrastructure projects.
He further noted that discussions have been initiated with executing agencies, including railway and road authorities, to explore rehabilitation measures for both villagers and wildlife in sensitive zones. The matter has also been taken up with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for coordinated action.
