Tripura, 02 March 2026: A recent incident from Mohanpur in Agartala has once again brought attention to the challenges faced by transgender individuals.
According to reports, a transgender person identified as Isha Das came into contact with Akash Das through social media. Their acquaintance gradually developed into a romantic relationship, and the two were reportedly involved with each other for nearly six years.
During this period, Isha Das was working at a salon outside the state and is alleged to have regularly supported Akash Das financially by sending money and other necessities.
The situation took a serious turn recently when Akash Das allegedly pressured Isha Das to marry him, reportedly threatening self-harm if the proposal was refused. Under this pressure, Isha returned to Agartala, leaving her job, and the two got married.
However, just six days after the marriage, disputes arose when Akash’s family came to know about Isha’s gender identity. It is alleged that Akash then denied prior knowledge of Isha being transgender.
On the previous night, tensions escalated, and members of Akash’s family allegedly subjected Isha Das to both mental and physical harassment before handing her over to the police.
Upon receiving information about the incident, members of the Tripura Transgender Welfare Board rushed to the West Women Police Station. They later secured Isha Das’s release, and she is currently under the protection of the Welfare Board.
Speaking to the media, board member Payel Das shared details of the incident and raised concerns about ongoing discrimination and violence against transgender individuals.
The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for awareness, acceptance, and legal protection for transgender persons in society.
