Tripura, 29 jan 2916: Along with development in various sectors, the Tripura Government has taken strong initiatives to rapidly develop the Information Technology (IT) sector in the state. The government aims to transform Tripura into the IT hub of the North Eastern region within the next few years. Keeping this vision in mind, steps have been taken to establish the largest data centre in the Northeast.
Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha said this while laying the foundation stone and performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the Airtel Data Centre at Chanmari, initiated by Bharti Airtel.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister stated that Tripura is moving swiftly from being a “Best Performer State” to becoming a “Best Model State.” He said that once the data centre becomes operational, unemployed youth, various government and private institutions, and social media platforms will be significantly benefited. This initiative is a timely and visionary decision of the state government.
For the construction of the data centre, the state government has provided one acre of land to Airtel. He added that once the data centre is established, Tripura’s IT sector will be further strengthened and industrial investment in the state will increase. The Chief Minister also pointed out that a large number of Tripura residents living outside the state are associated with the IT sector, and this development will encourage them to invest in Tripura.
He informed that due to the favorable environment for IT industries in Tripura, apart from Airtel, several other companies such as Messrs PVM Invensys Private Limited, Messrs Polo Towers Group, and Messrs CTRL-S have expressed interest in setting up data centres in the state. He further mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid special emphasis on expanding advanced data centres across the country, which are also crucial for strengthening India’s cyber security infrastructure. The Chief Minister expressed hope that by 2030, when India’s data storage capacity is expected to reach 8 gigawatts, this data centre in Tripura will play a significant role.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Information Technology and Finance, Pranajit Singha Roy, said that the state government is implementing development projects across all sectors. To boost the IT sector, the decision to establish a state-of-the-art data centre has been taken. He expressed confidence that this facility would play an important role in building a modern and technologically advanced Tripura. He also stated that once completed, the data centre would create employment opportunities for around 200 unemployed youths in the IT sector.
Secretary of the Information Technology Department, Kiran Gitte, also addressed the gathering. The welcome address was delivered by Bharti Airtel CEO, Balaji R. The Director of the Information Technology Department, Suprakash Jamatia, was also present.
