Agartala, Jan 27. In a major crackdown on illegal cannabis cultivation, Jatrapur Police on Tuesday destroyed around 2.15 lakh fully grown cannabis plants spread across nearly 90 plots during a large-scale operation conducted in dense forest areas under the police station’s jurisdiction.
The operation began at 8:30 am, led by Jatrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Siti Kanta Bardhan, with support from a massive security contingent comprising personnel from the 1st, 7th and 11th Battalions of TSR, along with police officers and constables. In total, over 100 security personnel participated in the drive.
According to police sources, the cannabis plantations were located in the western part of Jagatram Pur ADC Village, particularly in the Ulukhola area, covering nearly three square kilometres of dense forest. All the seized cannabis plants were cut down and set on fire on the spot.
The Officer-in-Charge stated that this was the 20th such anti-cannabis operation conducted by Jatrapur Police so far. He added that although some cultivators attempted to gather after learning about the police movement, they refrained from confrontation due to the overwhelming presence of security forces.
The operation lasted for five hours and 45 minutes, with security personnel taking a brief meal break in the forest around 1 pm, after food was arranged from a nearby hotel.
Police officials said the scale of destruction clearly indicates the extent of cannabis cultivation during the current season, including in reserved forest areas, posing a serious threat to law and environmental protection.
Reiterating zero tolerance, the OC warned that swift action will be taken immediately upon receiving any information about cannabis cultivation. “The administration is fully prepared to ensure that no trace of cannabis plants remains in the Jatrapur Police Station area,” he asserted.
