Assam, 26 Jan 2026: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, a huge consignment of banned cough syrup was seized from potato sacks at Cheragi under Patharkandi Police Station in Assam. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth around ₹4 crore in the illegal market. Two persons involved in the supply chain have been detained in connection with the case.
According to sources, the banned cough syrup was being transported from Guwahati to another state on Sunday. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, personnel from the BSF Intelligence Wing, along with the 171 Battalion of BSF under Silchar Sector and a special team of Patharkandi Police, intercepted a 14-wheeler truck in the Cheragi area on Sunday evening.

Following the interception, senior officials rushed to the spot, including Patharkandi Sub-Divisional Additional Superintendent of Police Anirban Sharma, Officer-in-Charge Manabjyoti Baro, and senior BSF officials. During a thorough search of the vehicle, the team recovered around 30,000 bottles of banned cough syrup packed in 150 cartons, which were concealed inside approximately 400 sacks of potatoes.
Police officials stated that the current market value of the seized cough syrup is approximately ₹4 crore.
In connection with the seizure, the truck driver Mahant Singh, a resident of Hojai, and the co-driver Balu Kumar, a resident of Bihar, were detained. The 14-wheeler truck used for transporting the contraband has also been seized.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of law, and further investigation is underway to trace the wider network involved in the illegal trafficking of banned pharmaceutical drugs.
The successful operation has been hailed as a significant blow to drug smugglers operating through Assam as a transit route.
