Ambassa: Jan 25. Ending years of anticipation for sports enthusiasts in Dharmanagar and across North Tripura, a newly constructed modern indoor sports hall for badminton and judo was formally inaugurated on Sunday at the Dharmanagar Sports Complex. Built at a cost of ₹133.33 lakh, the facility has been dedicated to the memory of renowned Tripura badminton player Gouri Shekhar Roy.
The inauguration was carried out by Tripura’s Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy during a ceremonial programme. The event was attended by North Zilla Sabhadhipati Aparna Nath, Zilla Saha-Sabhadhipati Bhabatosh Das, District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, Superintendent of Police Abinash Rai, YAS Director L. Darlong, and other dignitaries.
The programme began with a plantation drive and an inaugural song presented by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. The minister formally opened the hall by breaking a coconut and cutting the ribbon, following traditional customs. The inaugural ceremony also featured impressive judo and thang-ta demonstrations by students, which drew applause from the audience.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Tinku Roy said that the demand for a modern indoor stadium in Dharmanagar had existed for a long time. He noted that while the project had stalled during previous governments, the present government accorded it priority and ensured its completion. However, he acknowledged that due to work beginning under an older design, there were limitations in increasing gallery seating capacity. The minister further informed that the government is actively considering the construction of a cricket stadium at the Dinanath Narayani Vidyamandir ground in Dharmanagar to further boost sports infrastructure.
In his welcome address, YAS Director L. Darlong highlighted the facilities available at the indoor hall. Local sports enthusiasts expressed optimism that the new infrastructure would provide advanced training opportunities for emerging athletes, helping them prepare for national-level competitions.
The indoor sports hall, constructed under the initiative of the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation (TIDC), will serve as a significant milestone in Dharmanagar’s sports arena and contribute to the overall development of young athletes in the region.
