Tripura, 22 Jan 2026: In a major crackdown against drug trafficking, the High Level Drug Destruction Committee on Wednesday destroyed a huge consignment of seized cough syrup (Escaf) at Bodhjungnagar, following court orders.
The consignment was originally seized by the police on 17 October from Jirania Railway Station during a major operation. As per official records, a total of 1,07,800 bottles of Escaf cough syrup were confiscated, with an estimated market value of ₹2.12 crore. This is considered the largest cough syrup seizure in Tripura so far.

The destruction process was carried out in the presence of Abala Ramesh Reddy, Chairman of the High Level Drug Destruction Committee. Committee members Anirban Das and the SP (Traffic) were also present during the operation.
Addressing the media, senior police officials stated that the seizure was made based on a targeted operation after the consignment was booked from Delhi and transported via rail by misdeclaring the contents. The cough syrup, though legally manufactured, was being illegally diverted and misused as a narcotic substance, allegedly intended for smuggling to Bangladesh.
So far, five persons have been arrested in connection with the case and are currently in judicial custody. Police informed that the charge sheet will be filed soon.
Officials further emphasized that acting on the Chief Minister’s zero-tolerance directive against drugs, and under the guidance of the Director General of Police, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) has intensified operations across the state. Financial investigations have also been initiated, and properties linked to drug proceeds have been identified for possible attachment under legal provisions, including PIT-NDPS Act.
The police warned that no individual regardless of position, profession, or influence will be spared if found involved. Allegations of involvement of transport handlers and even personnel at lower levels are also being thoroughly investigated.
The public has been urged to cooperate by sharing information related to drug activities through helplines 1933 (Narcotics), 1930 (Cyber Crime), or 112. Authorities reiterated that strict action will continue to dismantle drug networks operating in and through Tripura.
