Agartala, Jan 21: Tripura Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha on Monday announced that the party will stage a statewide protest on Tuesday, condemning the alleged mistreatment of Jagadguru Shankaracharya during the Magh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking to the media in Agartala, Saha said reports from Uttar Pradesh indicated that Jagadguru Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati was stopped by police and mela authorities while he was on his way for a holy dip. The incident triggered a protest by the Shankaracharya and his followers at the venue.
Saha strongly condemned the incident and said the treatment of the religious leader had deeply hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community and its spiritual leaders.
Targeting the Uttar Pradesh government, Saha questioned the silence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and demanded his resignation. He also urged the Prime Minister to take immediate steps to ensure action against those responsible.
The Congress leader further claimed that district officials involved in the incident had questioned the Shankaracharya unnecessarily and even asked him to produce his identity proof.
Saha confirmed that the Tripura Pradesh Congress will join the nationwide demonstrations on Tuesday, calling for accountability and strict action from the Uttar Pradesh administration.
