Tripura, 17 Jan 2026: In a moment of pride for Tripura and its indigenous craft traditions, bamboo and cane artisans from the state have been commissioned to create exclusive invitation kits for the official Republic Day Reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 26, 2026.
Leading this prestigious national project is Samir Jamatia, who has been appointed as the Supervisor of the Bamboo Crafts Project, Tripura, under the guidance of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. The initiative marks a significant recognition of Tripura’s traditional bamboo and cane craftsmanship at the highest ceremonial platform of the country.
Expressing his gratitude, Samir Jamatia said that the project is a historic opportunity for Tripura’s grassroots artisans to showcase their indigenous skills before a national and international audience. He added that the initiative not only honours traditional craftsmanship but also strengthens sustainable livelihood opportunities for local craft communities.

The invitation kits are being crafted using three traditional techniques deeply rooted in Tripura’s indigenous heritage. These include Bamboo Mat Weaving inspired by the traditional Twising (Jamatia firewood basket), Bamboo Weaver Loom Mats created by combining fine bamboo strips with thread on a loom, and decorative Cane Pendants made from locally sourced materials.

Artisans from four locations across the state are actively involved in the project. Bagabasa and Nunnachara artisans are engaged in bamboo mat weaving, Ranibazar under Jirania subdivision is producing bamboo loom mats, while Nandanagar artisans are crafting the cane pendants.
The project has provided a major boost to indigenous bamboo and cane workers, offering them national exposure and reaffirming the cultural significance of Tripura’s traditional crafts. It also reflects Rashtrapati Bhavan’s commitment to celebrating India’s diverse cultural heritage and promoting indigenous artisans.
As the artisans embark on this prestigious journey, they extend a heartfelt Khulumkha / Namaste, proudly carrying Tripura’s craft legacy to Rashtrapati Bhavan for Republic Day 2026.
