Tripura, 16 Jan 2026: Acting on a tip-off, Madhupur Police, along with the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Bishalgarh, conducted a raid on Wednesday evening at Senapati Para in Madhupur and recovered a large consignment of sarees and illicit cumin allegedly meant for smuggling to Bangladesh.
According to police sources, the raid was carried out at the residence of Akash Debbarma. Subsequently, search operations were also conducted at the adjacent house belonging to Gautam Debnath. During the operation, police recovered around 49 bundles of sarees and approximately 15 sacks of black cumin (jeera). The seized items are estimated to have a market value of over ₹10 lakh.
Following the recovery, two persons Shyamal Debbarma and Akash Debnath were taken into custody and brought to Madhupur Police Station for further interrogation. Police officials stated that the seized goods will be produced before the Sub-Divisional Court on Thursday, and the detained individuals will be presented before the court as per legal procedure.
Sources alleged that the seized consignment belonged to Mithun Saha and a notorious smuggler, Suman Mia of the Miapara area, who is believed to have been involved in cross-border smuggling activities for a long time. Local residents have raised serious questions about how such large-scale smuggling operations continue despite strict border surveillance by police and the BSF.
Speaking to the media, police said,
“Based on secret information, we informed higher authorities and formed a team comprising the SDPO, myself, and other officers. We conducted a raid in the Purna Senapati Para area and recovered illegally stored sarees and sacks of cumin from the house. At present, the market value of the seized items is estimated at around ₹6–7 lakh. Two persons have been brought to the police station for questioning. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the actual owner of the seized goods.”
The incident has sparked widespread discussion among residents of the Madhupur area, particularly over whether the main accused will be brought to justice or manage to evade arrest.
