Agartala: Jan 03. Public anger spilled onto the streets in Churaibari after police failed to arrest the accused in a molestation case involving a young woman. This evening, over a hundred locals staged a road blockade on the Churaibari-Kadamtala road, burning tyres and demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and removal of the investigating officer.
The incident took place on December 29 in Ward No. 3 of Purba Churaibari Gram Panchayat under Churaibari police station.
According to the complaint, a local resident, Raj Nandi, allegedly attempted to molest a young woman while she was returning home after private tutoring. The accused fled when locals rushed to the spot following the victim’s screams.
Despite a formal complaint being lodged, police allegedly took no action for days, triggering outrage among residents. Protesters also accused the investigating officer of harassing the victim during the inquiry, further escalating tensions.
Following nearly three hours of blockade and traffic disruption, Churaibari police station OC Debabrata Biswas reached the site and assured protesters that the accused would be arrested and the investigating officer replaced. The protest was withdrawn after the assurance, though the vehicular movement remained affected for a prolonged period.
