Agartala: Jan 03. A three-day-old newborn girl, allegedly sold by her biological mother in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar sub-division, has been rescued by Childline and the District Child Protection authorities. After completing legal formalities, the child has been handed back to the mother under strict monitoring.
According to Prithwiraj Chandra, Supervisor of the North District Child Helpline (CHL), a complaint was received at the Child Helpline Control Room on December 31, 2025, alleging that a newborn baby had been sold in Ward No. 1 of Bagbassa Gram Panchayat under the Bagbassa Assembly constituency.
Acting on the complaint, a joint team of Childline officials and Bagbassa Police reached the area on New year. During initial questioning, the woman identified as Madhabi Choudhury, a resident of the Baraital area, denied being pregnant, claiming she had been divorced long ago. However, sustained questioning by Childline staff and local residents led her to admit that she had given birth to a child around ten days earlier.
She initially claimed that the baby had been handed over to her cousin’s wife, Tina Devi, but this claim could not be substantiated. Following further investigation and confidential inputs, the newborn was finally rescued from Dilip Nath and his wife Champa Nath, residents of the Lalchhara area.
After the recovery, the mother expressed her willingness to raise the child herself. Following due legal procedures and necessary consent, the Child Protection Commission handed the baby back to her mother. Authorities have stated that the child’s safety and future protection will remain under continuous monitoring by Childline.
