Tripura, 02 Jan 2025: Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said that unless students are provided with opportunities for modern, quality education, they risk falling behind their peers from other states at the national level. To address this challenge, the state government has taken initiatives to build modern education infrastructure and has already begun implementing several schemes to ensure quality learning.
The Chief Minister was speaking while inaugurating the four-day Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Ramesh English Medium Higher Secondary School at Udaipur. Prior to the inauguration, dignitaries paid floral tributes to the portraits of the school’s founder, late Ramesh Chandra Dutta, and its first headmaster, late Dhirendra Chandra Dutta.
In his address, the Chief Minister described Ramesh English Medium Higher Secondary School as one of the most prestigious schools of the state. He said that many former students of the institution have gone on to make a name for themselves across the country as doctors, engineers, scientists, writers, poets, MLAs, and even as Chief Ministers. He recalled that the school was established on January 2, 1951, through the initiative of Ramesh Chandra Dutta, with significant contributions from his son, noted educationist Birendra Chandra Dutta. The institution, he noted, was the result of their tireless efforts and long struggle.
The Chief Minister said that although the school was initially run as a Bengali-medium institution, it has now been converted into an English-medium school. For infrastructure development, an amount of ₹8.51 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of a new permanent school building. In addition, ₹5.89 crore has been approved for the construction of a synthetic turf football ground to enhance sports facilities for students.
He further stated that while multiple education boards operate in Tripura with different curricula, the CBSE follows a uniform curriculum with special emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Referring to the state’s educational history, he said that the Tripura Board of Secondary Education was formed in 1976, and prior to that, up to 1975, the West Bengal Board was in operation. In the absence of any university in the state at that time, students had to depend on the University of Calcutta for higher education. At present, Tripura has multiple boards as well as several government and private universities, marking significant progress in the education sector.
Extending his best wishes to the students, the Chief Minister expressed hope that the institution would continue to contribute to the state’s educational development.
Addressing the gathering, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said that Ramesh English Medium Higher Secondary School has been a guiding light of education, values and culture for the last 75 years. He wished success to the four-day Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Among those present at the programme were Gomati Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Debal Debroy, MLAs Abhishek Debroy and Jitendra Majumder, Gomati District Magistrate Rinku Lather, Superintendent of Police Dr Kiran Kumar K, and other dignitaries. The welcome address was delivered by the school’s Acting Headmaster Pradip Chakraborty, while the programme was presided over by Udaipur Municipal Council Chairperson Shital Chandra Majumder.
