Assam Police Seize Codeine Cough Syrup Worth ₹24 Lakh at Churaibari, Two Arrested
Assam, 02 Jan 2026: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Assam Police seized a huge consignment of banned codeine-based cough syrup worth over ₹24 lakh during a routine checking operation at the Churaibari watch post. Two persons were arrested in connection with the seizure.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police personnel led by the Officer-in-Charge of Churaibari Outpost, Niranjan Das, intercepted a mini lorry bearing registration number AS28AC-2040 on Friday around 3 pm. The vehicle was travelling from Guwahati towards Agartala via Haflong and Silchar, carrying vegetables and fruits.
During a thorough search, police discovered codeine cough syrup bottles cleverly concealed inside fruit crates. A total of 2,423 bottles were recovered, each containing 100 ml of the banned psychotropic substance. According to police estimates, the black-market value of the seized cough syrup exceeds ₹24 lakh.
Police arrested the driver, Nur Jamal, and the co-driver/helper, Raju Ahmed, both residents of Barpeta district in Assam. Preliminary investigation revealed that the traffickers had adopted a new modus operandi by hiding narcotic substances inside fruit cartons to evade detection.
Speaking on the seizure, police officials said they had prior information about a suspected vehicle carrying narcotic substances. The alertness of the Churaibari outpost team ensured the vehicle was stopped immediately and searched meticulously, leading to the recovery.
A case has been registered against the accused under the provisions of the NDPS Act, and both arrested persons will be produced before the Sribhumi court for further legal proceedings. Police have stated that further investigation is underway to identify the wider network involved in the drug trafficking racket.
