Agartala, August 16, 2025: A shocking incident unfolded at IGM Hospital in Agartala after a newborn was discovered hidden inside a shopping bag. The child, who was delivered inside the hospital premises, was later declared dead.
According to police, they had received information that a woman was in labor and that her husband had allegedly assaulted her. On arrival, officers learned that the newborn had already died, though they had not initially seen the baby themselves. “We were informed that the infant was placed in a box and later hidden in a shopping bag,” police officials told reporters. “The father has admitted to attempting to move the baby, but details of his involvement remain unclear. We are investigating further.”
Doctors at IGM Hospital confirmed that the woman was first admitted to the outpatient department with heavy bleeding before being transferred to the labor room. “We only found the umbilical cord and placenta,” one doctor explained. “The patient denied delivering a baby, but later the child was retrieved with the help of security staff. Unfortunately, the baby was no longer alive. The mother is currently stable after some bleeding but remains under observation.”
The father, meanwhile, gave contradictory statements when questioned by authorities, at times claiming the baby had died earlier, and at other times admitting he had placed the child inside a bag.
Doctors estimate the delivery was at full term, approximately 36–37 weeks. Police have launched an investigation into whether the baby was born alive and the circumstances surrounding the death.
