SHABD News | New Delhi | August 7, 2025: India is celebrating the 11th National Handloom Day today, commemorating the nation’s rich weaving heritage and honouring the historic Swadeshi Movement launched on August 7, 1905. The movement encouraged the use of indigenous products, especially handloom, as a powerful tool of resistance against British colonial rule.

To mark the occasion, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh presented the prestigious Sant Kabir Handloom Awardsand National Handloom Awards 2025 in New Delhi. The awards recognise the outstanding contributions of weavers, designers, marketers, start-ups, and producer companies in the handloom sector.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Singh highlighted the increasing global demand for sustainable textile products, and noted that India’s handloom industry is well-positioned to meet this growing trend. He emphasized the need to popularize handloom products on the global stage and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to protecting the intellectual property and designs of Indian weavers.
National Handloom Day serves as a tribute to the countless artisans whose craftsmanship continues to shape India’s cultural and economic fabric, while promoting self-reliance and sustainability.
