Assam is grappling with widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, flash floods, and waterlogging across multiple districts. With more rain predicted in the coming days, the state government has activated emergency response measures.
Guwahati, May 22: Assam witnessed light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Thursday morning, as a weather system continues to influence the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast similar conditions for the next seven days, cautioning residents to stay alert.
The ongoing weather activity is attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation persisting at 1.5 km above sea level over the region. This system is expected to cause intermittent showers across various parts of Assam in the coming days.
On Wednesday, heavy rainfall lashed several districts, including Lakhimpur, Dhubri, South Salmara, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi, disrupting daily life and triggering flash floods and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Although river levels remain below the danger mark, localized flash floods have already been reported. In South Salmara and Mankachar, waterlogging has impacted daily routines, including school operations and basic civic services.
In Guwahati, 112.5 mm of rainfall was recorded on Tuesday. Areas such as Mirza Circle, Chandmari, and Hatigaonexperienced severe water accumulation. Officials expressed concern that continued heavy rainfall could worsen urban flooding, given the city’s already strained drainage infrastructure.
Authorities have also warned of possible tree falls, localized landslides, and traffic disruptions due to sustained rainfall. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) is closely monitoring the situation, while city officials remain on high alert.
To manage the crisis, the state government has activated emergency response systems, with ministers visiting flood-prone and erosion-hit areas to assess conditions and supervise relief measures.
As part of long-term flood mitigation, encroachment removal drives have been launched in vulnerable localities. Officials hope these steps will improve drainage efficiency and reduce the impact of flash floods during peak monsoon.
With the IMD forecasting more rainfall in the week ahead, residents are advised to stay informed through official updates and follow safety advisories.
