Tripura, 3 May 2025: Unakoti District Congress Blocks National Highway Over Three-Point Charter of Demands In a major political demonstration, the Unakoti District Congress staged a road blockade at Chini Bagan in Kailashahar on Saturday, raising a three-point charter of demands. The agitation caused severe traffic disruption, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded and daily commuters in distress. The primary demands include immediate elections in the Autonomous District Council (ADC) areas, the operationalization of the long-abandoned Kailashahar Airport, and the inclusion of Unakoti district in the national railway map — as it remains the only district in India without a railway connection.
The protest followed a scheduled convention titled “Save the Constitution & Tribal Congress Convention”, organized by the Unakoti District Congress. The event commenced at 11 AM and concluded at 3 PM. Soon after, Congress leaders and supporters moved to the national highway to begin their blockade. Key leaders present at the convention included MLA Birajit Sinha, Unakoti District Congress President Md. Badruzzaman, and senior leaders Rudrendu Bhattacharjee, Nar Singh Das, Runu Miya, Ratan Dutta, and Ashish Sengupta. From the Tribal Congress, notable attendees included Bighna Dhar Tripura, Ram Bahadur Singh, Dhirendra Debbarma, Birendra Debbarma, and Tin Kumar Darlong. Speaking to the media during the blockade, MLA Birajit Sinha criticized the state government for ignoring the Tripura High Court’s directive to conduct ADC Village Council elections.
“Despite the court’s clear order, the government is delaying the elections. This is a direct insult to the rights of the Indigenous people,” he stated. He also condemned the government’s repeated yet unfulfilled promises to revive Kailashahar Airport and its failure to extend rail connectivity to Unakoti district.
The protest witnessed a record turnout of party workers and supporters, signaling growing discontent in the region over the government’s inaction on key development and democratic issues.
